SCSD Looks to Further Improve Dual Enrollment

During the Spring Cove School District March committee of the whole meeting, Superintendent Dr. Betsy Baker announced that the district had submitted a dual enrollment grant.

“If our application is approved by the Pa. Department of Education, it will provide over $70,000 to pay for college credits for our students in 2023-24,” Baker said.

She said Spring Cove School District already has a strong dual enrollment program. Other districts with few or no dual enrollment courses may be more likely to be funded, but Spring Cove applied anyway because the funding would greatly benefit the students.

“We are very proud of the dual enrollment program we have developed over the past few years,” Baker said. “We now offer 21 dual enrollment courses, which can cover most general education requirements for students who elect to pursue college degrees after high school. The credits our students are earning in high school are not only better preparing them for academic success in college, but our students have benefited in many other ways such as being able to finish their bachelor degrees in less than four years, pursuing additional majors or minors, scheduling earlier than their peers, and reducing their course load to better balance academics with athletics, extra curricular activities or jobs.”

The goal of the school is to get 25 percent of the students involved with the dual enrollment program.

Board members were invited to participate in the fifth annual Personal Finance Festival. This provides students the opportunity to make simulated life choices in areas such as housing, utilities, food, transportation, health and entertainment in order to better understand personal finance.

The cast and crew of the Footloose musical are preparing for their upcoming production. Thursday, March 30, will be opening night with other shows on Friday , March 31 , and Saturday, April 1. Tickets are now available online at https://centralhigh.booktix.com/.

Kindergarten registrations are still being accepted for fall. Approximately 90 children have enrolled for 2023-24.

Elementary social studies textbooks and resources from the IMPACT program by McGraw Hill were reviewed. The program would cover civics, history, geography, the constitution, and citizenship. The new course proposals and associated curricular resources for Spring Cove Middle School were also presented at the meeting. They include new electives such as sports science, meteorology, archery, games through history, and others for students who were previously only offered Band and Chorus.

The next regular meeting will be held Monday, March 20, at the administration office board room at 7 p.m.
