Betty Louise Clapper

Betty Louise Clapper, 94, formerly of Texas Corner Rd, New Enterprise, and Jacks Corner Rd, Hopewell, entered into the heavenly realm on March 17, 2023. Blessed to live unassisted through her 93rd year, Betty relocated to Locust Grove, Virginia to live out her remaining days with son and daughter-in-law Barry and Risa.

Betty was born in Loysburg, on Dec. 5, 1928. She was the last remaining child of Howard K. Beach and Iva (Grubb) Beach. Her siblings were Glen Beach, Kenneth Beach, M. Ruth Dyer and M. Delores Hershberger.

Betty was united in marriage to Clyde Emanuel Clapper Feb. 16, 1946. He preceded her in death on June 28, 1995. She was also preceded in death by her son, Stephen Clapper, and grandchildren Christy Martin and Jeremy Clapper. 

Known as a meticulous housewife and great mother, Betty knew how to enlist her “6 little helpers” to keep windows clean, dishes washed, the house dusted, and clothes pressed and put away. She often commented how she’d hung enough diapers on her clothesline to go around the world.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Sharon Miller (Dwight) of Roaring Spring, son, Barry (Risa) of Locust Grove, VA, daughter, Susan Young (Vernon) of Hopewell, daughter, Barb Miller (Ted) of Clearville, son, Tim (Denise) of Linn Creek, Missouri, and daughter-in-law, Debra Alling of Monroe, GA. “Grandma Clapper” will be sadly missed by grandchildren Matthew, Josh, Philip, Marissa, Cassondra, Jennifer, Becky and Doug, and sixteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to maintaining a well-run household, Betty worked hard as a farmer’s wife in the early years of her marriage. There was a period of years where husband Clyde Jr, drove truck and was often gone for a week at a time.

Betty managed the farm including the morning and evening milking, making hay, and all the chores associated with running a farm. It was this work ethic and persistence that served as an example to her children and molded their character in a positive and life-long way.

Later, she put her skilled seamstress abilities to work and was employed for a few years both at Martinsburg Shoe Factory and Lion Manufacturing (Sewing) Company in Everett.

She was a great cook and made the very best spaghetti. As in many households, Betty’s children were always eager for the next holiday or family get together to enjoy family games, fellowship, and to feast on her cherry or wild black raspberry pies.

Betty was a life-long member of the German Seventh Day Baptist Church in Salemville, where she was highly respected for her wisdom and knowledge of God’s word. Even in her final days she unashamedly shared her Christian testimony with multiple healthcare workers. 

A funeral took place March 22, 2023, at the German Seventh Day Baptist Church, Salemville. Pastor Andrew Camenga officiated. Interment was in Salemville Cemetery.
