Pilot Discovers Barn Fire

Herald of April 29, 1948

A large barn fire at the George B. Wineland farm was discovered by Don Slep, manager of the Blair County Airport, as he was circling over the airport with a student pilot. He landed the plane on the end of the runway, and while James Brady of Altoona ran across the field to the barn, Slep taxied the plane to the administration building and called in the alarm. Firemen used a collapsible canvas tank for the first time, with Ritchey’s Dairy trucks and New Enterprise Stone and Lime concrete mixers hauling water to the tank.
