Taxpayers in the Claysburg-Kimmel School District will see an increase, but only half of what it could have been. At its Wednesday, May 10 meeting, the Claysburg-Kimmel School Board voted to approve the 2023-24 proposed final budget with a 3-percent tax increase, half the 6 percent Act 1 allowable limit. The increase will cost households an average of $23 and is expected to raise about $93,000 in revenue for the district.

The increase brings Greenfield Township's real estate taxes to 9.05 mills, and Kimmel Township's to 10.87 mills.

Business Manager Dena Burket said the final budget, which shows a surplus of $121,948, was achieved by Superintendent Mark Loucks and the entire administrative team working together to eliminate a more than $750,000 deficit the budget showed last month.

"The administrative team worked on this budget diligently," Burket said. "Superintendent Loucks was instrumental in working alongside us to make this happen."

When first proposed last month, the budget showed an estimated total revenue of $14,487,962 with total expenditure estimated at more than $15 million, leaving a deficit of almost $800,000. After a month of combing through line items, the district's final 2023-24 budget shows revenue of $14,810,390 with expenditures of $14,788,442, leaving $21,948 in revenue over expenses. The nearly $22,000 in revenue remaining after expenses, along with $100,000 in budgetary reserves, gives the district a $121,948 cushion and no deficit.

In other action, the board voted to eliminate one music teacher position effective at the end of the 2022-23 school year and furlough a teacher based on seniority. The district will still have two music instructors.

While the playing fields are finished, the Claysburg softball and baseball teams were not expected to play at the new Athletic Complex this year due to ongoing construction in other areas of the complex. However, the girls' softball team was able to inaugurate the new field with a triple-header on Monday, May 15.

Because of make-up games, three games were played with the Lady Bulldogs hosting Tussey Mountain, Forbes Road, and Southern Fulton respectively. If the results of Monday's games are any indication, the new field is going to be friendly to the home team as C-K swept the three games by a combined score of 27-5, edging Tussey Mountain 3-2, blanking Forbes Road 11-0, and outscoring Southern Fulton 13-3.
