Flag Raised

Herald of June 2, 1898

A flag measuring 8 by 14 feet in size made by Miss Anna Bolger was raised on a mammoth pole at the “Delta” where South Market and Locust streets meet in Martinsburg, as part of the community’s Memorial Day celebration. A procession to the cemeteries preceded the flag dedication At the cemeteries the impressive ceremony of decoration according to the ritual of the Grand Army of the Republic were gone through.

Two small children of Mr. Samuel Hanley of East Sharpsburg wounded a large black snake, measuring six feet. They wrapped it in their skirts and carried it home to show to their parents.

Mr. John Smith of Millerstown built a paling fence on the southern side of this property. The fence is inclined about 23 ½ degrees to the plane of a small branch of Clover Creek, which flows only a short distance away.

The residence for J. Hagey in Henrietta is now finished and will be occupied during this week.
