Two Chain-Reaction Accidents Occur on Woodbury Pike Within Minutes of Each Other

Two afternoon accidents on Friday, June 16, caused traffic delays during one of the heaviest traveled times on Woodbury Pike just north of Roaring Spring.

According to Friendship Fire Chief James Musselman, the first call for a three-vehicle accident in front of New Enterprise Stone & Lime came in at 3:07 p.m. While on scene, Musselman received a call about a four-vehicle accident a few hundred yards away in front of Yerty's Auto Service.

Musselman said both accidents were the result of stopped vehicles being hit from behind.

Traffic through the corridor during the afternoon hours is consistently heavy and with the detours around Roaring Spring in place, traffic is often backed up from the stop lights in Roaring Spring, slowing traffic with vehicles frequently coming to a stop.

Musselman said traffic was at a standstill when the driver of a vehicle traveling south on Woodbury Pike failed to notice traffic in front of New Enterprise had come to a stop and slammed into the vehicle in front of it, which was then pushed into another vehicle.

The crash in front of Yerty's was caused when vehicles traveling south on Woodbury Pike were stopped because of the accident in front of New Enterprise. Musselman said a 2022 Mitsubishi failed to stop and hit the vehicle directly in front of it. That caused the second vehicle to hit the vehicle in front of it, and that vehicle was pushed into the vehicle in front of it, pushing it into the back of the fourth vehicle. Musselman said both accidents appear to be caused by distracted driving.

Musselman said the nobody was injured in the accident in front of New Enterprise and that one woman in the accident in front of Yerty's was transported to Conemaugh Nason for minor injuries.

Freedom Township Volunteer Fire Company was called in to assist at the scene.
