DEP Hold Meeting

The Department of Environmental Protection held a meeting in the Northern Bedford high School auditorium to hear citizens’ views on a proposed state strategy aimed at controlling pollution from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). A CAFO was defined as an operation that housed approximately 700 dairy cattle or 2,500 swine. Attendees questioned the details of the plan and voiced concerns that the regulations would not be enforced.

A surprise 60th wedding anniversary picnic was held in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Edwards of Williamsburg. Seventy family members and friends attended.

Stover’s Insurance won the 1998 Poly League Championship by defeating Wineland Equipment 14-11. Josh McConnell pitched five-plus innings to gain the win.

Approximately 150 Scouts and 30 staff members, along with five girls from the Fresh Air program, enjoyed a weeklong Girl Scout camp at Shawnee Park in Roaring Spring.
