Beef Shortage in the Cove
Herald of Aug. 2, 1973
A beef shortage was being felt in the Cove, and area butchers and retailers cited three causes for the shortage. The government extended a price freeze on beef while suspending the freezes on other meats. Farmers were holding their steer from market in hopes of gaining a higher price once the freeze was lifted, and consumers were also at fault for hoarding beef to avoid the higher prices when the freeze was lifted.
A barn fire along Piney Creek just north of Martinsburg caused a nearly $50,000 estimated loss on the Wayne Smith farm. Another fire destroyed a 30 by 450 foot storage shed filled with hay and machinery on the Taylor Dively property at Claysburg, RD. The loss there was estimated at $10,000.
