Girls Wrestling Could Be Added to Central's Winter Sports Schedule

Spring Cove School District Athletic Director Stacy Kuster is looking to bring a girls wrestling program to the district as an official sport.

According to Kuster, girls wrestling is the fastest growing sport in the country. It has been approved by the PIAA as an official sport. Spring Cove S.D. currently has one girl already wrestling on the varsity boys team. Several other girls have expressed interest in taking part if the district can pull a team together.

Kuster will attend a Sept. 12 Zoom meeting with the PIAA in regard to girls wrestling programs. Kuster said she is planning to move forward with the program at this point as a winter sport.

The girls team would practice the same time as the boys and the varsity and junior varsity coaches would divide time between the two teams. Kuster said all wrestling coaches are in support of the girls team. In the initial year, there may not be any dual meets, according to Kuster, but there will likely be triangular meets and Saturday meets with a number of different schools involved. Bedford, Northern Bedford, Chestnut Ridge and Claysburg-Kimmel have started programs and could be involved with these meets.

There is slated to be 13 weight classes in girls wrestling, but Kuster said that may not be realistic in the initial season. She is looking to get the program off the ground and established and believes it will continue to grow with time and exposure as it has in so many other areas across the country.

With coaches and space not a cost issue, the only initial start up costs would be travel expenses, any tournament fees, and their wrestling singlets.
