Picnic a Grand Success

Herald of Sept. 22, 1898

The Farmers’ Harvest Home Picnic, held in Byers’ grove in Henrietta, was a grand success. The crowd was estimated to be anywhere from five hundred to one thousand. Amusements included a wheelbarrow race,a foot race, a bicycle race, a baseball game, a greased pig race, band music, a glee club, and selected readings. The evening ended with a competition to climb a greased pole to claim the dollar attached at the top. Harry Weyant claimed the dollar.

The Bell Telephone Company has repaired the line entering Martinsburg. Phones have been placed in the stores of F. W. Keagy and A. O. Dilling, the latter place having been made the exchange office.

Mr. S.S. Rhodes, one of the most practical farmers and the foremost dairyman of Curryville, sold one of the largest, if not the largest, cow in the Cove . Mr. Rhodes received $58 for the cow and was not anxious to sell at that price.
