Father and Son Die in Fire

Herald of Nov. 2, 1923

Luther Gates, a resident of Yellow Creek, and his oldest son Harry, age 17 years, were burned to death when their house caught fire on Wednesday evening of the week before last. When fire was discovered, the family rushed out of the house and it was found that the oldest son had not gotten out. His father went back in after him, but they were not able to escape the flames.

On Friday evening the members of the Ever Faithful Bible class of the First Brethren church met at the parsonage to help celebrate the birthday anniversary of the pastor’s wife, Mrs. J. I Hall. The affair was a complete surprise, and a pleasant time was had by all. Mrs. Hall was the recipient of some nice gifts which were much appreciated.

John Merrill Delozier, little son of Harvey and Mabel Delozier, died at the parental home in Scratchtown, on Thursday October 18 after an illness of two weeks from uremic poisoning. The child was aged 10 years, 7 months and 1 day.
