Theaters the Subject of New Book

Herald of Jan. 2, 2014

Michael Farrow’s book “Now Showing: A History of Altoona and Blair County Theatres” talked about theaters in the Morrisons Cove including the Pastime Theater in Roaring Spring that no one else had remembered at the time. The building, which included two store fronts, a lodge hall and a bowling alley, still stands on Main Street. About 22 other theaters were mentioned in the book. Farrow said the interesting thing about the Martinsburg Theatre was that their Herald advertisements didn’t include an address. He figured that probably was not necessary in a small town.

Herald reporter/photographer Carlos Lamborn repurposed old Herald typecases to create a one-of-a-kind dining room table. The cases were filled with wood type and printer’s tools from the Herald’s history.

As part of the M&T Bank’s Food Bank Drive, the Roaring Spring Branch of M&T donated $1,000 to the Roaring Spring food Pantry.
