Before the start of World War II, the city of Salonika had the largest Jewish population in Greece, totaling approximately 50,000. In April 1941, the Germans invaded and occupied Greece. The Jewish people were soon forced into two large ghettos. By mid-1943, more than 45,000 Jews had been deported from their beloved city to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
