Spanish Articles in the Herald are Appropriate for the Community

Maybe I'm going blind in my old age, but I don't recall having seen Spanish language versions of Cove news until the April 16, 2020, edition. Good for you and for our next-door neighbors, who have been ignored far too long.

How are our Latino friends going to get the local news – start their own newspaper? I encourage every school-age person I encounter to become fluent in Spanish, an option that – again – I don't recall being available at either Morrison Cove High or Central in its first year, 1960-61.

I had the Rev. D.L. Shaffer’s instruction in Latin for two years and Frank E. Landis, an excellent teacher in French, as a senior.

In college, I continued with French, attaining a minor which has been practically of no use ever since because of its classic, literary method – not conversational or colloquial.

The same French professors at Catawba (N.C.) College also taught Spanish, but since they already spoke French with a southern American accent, and since starting from scratch as an adult in another “foreign” language did not seem practical, well ... .

In the decades since, how often have I wished I could converse in Spanish with people I’ve met across the U.S.A. nearly every day.

My travel bucket list still includes Chile and Argentina, but visiting the wine regions there would have been so much more enjoyable were I able to read and speak Spanish.

So, keep up the good bilingual editions, as seems appropriate.
