Waterside Loses in Baseball

Herald of Aug. 6, 1895

Martinsburg defeated Waterside 16-4 in the first game played by the Southern Cove team. A front-page story said the game was made disagreeable by “the continuous kicking of Rice,” pitcher and shortstop for Waterside, who was hooted by the Martinsburg fans because he questioned every decision of the umpire.

The spring at Roaring Spring was to be tapped with a four-inch pipe for the benefit of the paper mill.

John C. Treese of Williamsburg, son of Francis and the late Mary Treese, formerly of Royer, died of typhoid. He was 22 years old and was married eight months ago to Susie Tetwiler of Martinsburg.

Andrew Galbraith of Roaring Spring, formerly of the firm of Akers & Galbraith, left for New York City, where he obtained a position with a large milling company.

S.B. Stonerook Jr. wrote a long report about his group’s camping experience at Yellowstone National Park. Crossing the Big Horn Mountain was described as the worst part.
