Fire Damages Stores

Herald of July 19, 1973

Fire swept through the heart of Roaring Spring business district, destroying the Family Fashions Store, formerly Klevans) and heavily damaging the G&M 5¢ to $1.00 store. Nearby businesses received smoke damage. Roaring Spring Fire Chief Mearle G. Pote said that when he first came on scene, flames were shooting out of front of the Family Fashions building. One fireman was injured when bricks from the G&M store fell on him.

A runaway truck streaked down the east slope of Tussey Mountain last Friday morning when its brakes failed. It crashed into trees, injuring the driver, Garth Honsaker. The truck, loaded with shale, was descending the mountain on Route 164 when its brakes overheated and stopped working. The truck crossed Route 26 at the bottom, hit a parked car, and continued 200 feet into the woods, uprooting trees. Honsaker suffered a broken arm and collar bone.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schramm of Williamsburg celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on June 27.
