Derailment in Roaring Spring

Herald of Aug. 8, 2013

A minor derailment occurred in front of the Appvion Spring Mill in Roaring Spring. Two rail cars being pulled by two Everett Railroad locomotives jumped the main track in front of the mill and scraped along four tank cars sitting on a side track. There was no release of any substance or leakage in any of the damaged rail cars. Ironically, Blair County Emergency Management was planning to hold an emergency drill at the plant the following day.

The Robert Smith School in Hopewell Township was being torn down. The new owner of the property decided not to preserve the building because it was too deteriorated to restore. He planned to move his business to that location.

John E. Oldham, who served on Roaring Spring Borough Council for many years, died at the age of 76 after a battle with cancer.

Chuck Sollenberger of Martinsburg shot his first hole-in-one while playing at the Standing Stone Golf Club in Huntingdon. He aced the par-3 168 yard 17th hole with a 7-iron.
