Brick Roads to Get Paved

Martinsburg Borough council advertised for bids to begin construction on the most extensive street rebuilding programs in many years. South Market Street and West Allegheny Street will be repaved, with concrete and black-top being placed over existing brick roads.

Picking crews of the Blue Mountain Cannery were set to start harvesting sweet corn Monday, with the cannery starting operations at noon. Thousands of baskets were distributed to tomato growers this week for regular daily shipments to the Heinz cannery.

Lester Longenecker of Clappertown, with his new self propelled combine, has cut and threshed 1,174 bushels of oats in 9 hours and 31 acres of wheat in 6 hours. He can harvest 50 acres of hay, which is quite a record.

Williamsburg installed a police signal light at the corner of Second and High streets. The Williamsburg telephone operator will operate the light, which will notify police on duty that an emergency call awaits at the telephone office.
